creating precision light and control

Completed in October 2012 this ambitious permanent installation is the final incarnation of the Mirrie Dancers project.
The Mareel light work occupies both the external and internal spaces of Shetland's exciting new cinema, music and education venue, transforming the relationship of the building to its context and revealing moments of light, colour and lace.  The building is situated in a prominent quayside area in Lerwick next to the new Shetland Museum and Archives, and is a hub and a focus for the creative community and a catalyst for the emerging creative industry sector in Shetland.
The work uses seventy-eight specially fabricated projection systems and nearly 300 meters of hand made linear light, to maximise the quality and clarity of the illumination and remain intact in this very demanding maritime environment. The seventeen lace projection instruments have been developed for each lace piece, made by local Shetland knitters.
